In the Mirror of Cartography- from mappa mundi to sat nav- how maps reflect the culture of the age
This course is for anyone wishing to gain an insight into cartography and the history of ideas. No previous knowledge of cartography or geography required.

The aim of the course is
- to introduce participants to the development of the art and science of map-making and cartography in Christendom, Europe and the West;
- to develop awareness of how much maps reflect the culture of their age;
- to understand how different cultures determine the purpose of maps;
- to encourage students to view maps from a critical perspective;
- to assess the purpose and integrity of the cartographer's work in context.
Each session will consist of an illustrated presentation, followed by group discussion and plenary time.
The course is self-catering. Friday evening meal will be bring-and-share. Otherwise food will be provided and the participants will prepare meals and do the washing up. The number of places is limited.
