Visions For the Future: International Theological Summer School

26 June to 9 July 2010

2010 is a large year for Scotland with several significant anniversaries: the Reformation, including Calvin and Knox; the Edinburgh 1910 World Missionary Conference, which inspired much of the 20th century’s ecumenical hope and energy; and the Jubilee of Scottish Churches House itself, founded in 1960 by the Scottish churches as ‘a place that the churches hold in common, and from which they develop their ministry and mission together’.

To celebrate all this, Scottish Churches House will hold its second International Theological Summer School in Dunblane on the theme, ‘Visions for the Future’.

The Programme

The programme offers a unique opportunity for 20-25 Christians and others from all over the world to study the complex and varied social, religious and cultural life of Scotland. A mix of ages is expected and students require no qualifications to attend. A wide range of excursions will introduce participants to congregations and divinity schools, inter-faith and social action groups, the Scottish Parliament, Storytelling Centre and Poetry Library.

There will also be visits to Iona and the Iona Community, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Glasgow, New Lanark and Paisley – all in the company of skilled interpreters of their character and
history. Discussions will take place with many who are wrestling with contemporary issues of theology, the arts, society and the environment.

Members of Scottish churches will be invited to share in this international ecumenical experience. Local congregations are asked to send participants to join the summer school either full time or for an excursion or day seminar. National and international Christians together in an uncertain world will face the question, What are our ‘Visions for the Future’?
